How Kiran got his name

Ever since we found out we were having a boy, people asked us if we had a name yet. I would tell people we're putting together a list of names we like, but we will wait and see what our son is like before giving him a name. After that, many people would offer name suggestions. Which is fine if these people are family or friends, we actually got a lot of good suggestions that way, one of which we ended up using (thanks to my sisters Becky and Sarah, who if I am remembering correctly both independently suggested Kiran).

What would you name this cutie?
But I was always annoyed when complete strangers on the street would offer name suggestions. Usually it would be their own name. One lady's name was "Shae." She was the checkout lady at Sears. She said her name is a good name (which I agree) and it would be perfectly fine for a boy too (not in my book, but hey) and that I should consider it for my baby (um, no thanks). Anyway if I did use her name, when my son asked me how he got his name, what would I say, I named him after the Sears checkout lady? That would not do.

A few days before going into labor, Mahesh and I reviewed our list. We were originally looking for a name that worked in both India and here, but not finding many choices we quickly gave up, deciding to go with a western name. Our list contained about 15 names at that point:

Noah

chance

forrest

Marshall

steele

a-run

Kaden

Elliot

Reed
 Owen
Lucas/Luca
Theo

Vincent

Luke

Dax

Kiran or some variant

We ended up narrowing our list down to four names: Theo, Noah, Lucas, and Forrest.

Out of those names, Lucas was my favorite and I really thought we were going to name our son Lucas. But when Kiran was born, he just didn't look like most of those names to me.

First time holding him after birth in ICU
We ended up going back to the long list, and Mahesh was surprised when I picked Kiran off that list and added that to our shortlist. It was the only name that was also an Indian name. I was torn between Kiran and Lucas for about 3 days. When nurses would come into our hospital room, I would try out the names. "This is Lucas" or "This is Kiran" I would tell people, testing out how it felt to say each name, and whether it felt right with the new baby.

There was this brusk asian head nurse who would come in from time to time to check on us.

She would often ask, "You got a name for him yet?"

"Not yet," We would say.

"You should call him Mr. Big!" She joked with us once.

He could have been Mr. Big Shankar Grenier-Nagarajan
When we were close to deciding, I told that same nurse, "I think we might go with Kiran for a name."

"That's a girl name!" She immediately said, and left the room.

In the end, Mahesh liked it, I felt like none of our other choices fit him as well as Kiran. And my mom said she liked it too. So we went with Kiran.

He would be "Baby Boy Grenier" no longer
