How far along are you: 26 Weeks
How big is the baby: The network of nerves in your baby’s ears is better developed and more sensitive than before. He may now be able to hear both your voice and your partner’s as you chat with each other. He’s inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of his lungs. These so-called breathing movements are also good practice for when he’s born and takes that first gulp of air. And he’s continuing to put on baby fat. He now weighs about a pound and two-thirds and measures 14 inches (an English hothouse cucumber) from head to heel. (source)
How are you feeling: Health-wise, I have been feeling pretty good. The first month of my new job was quite hectic and although I never considered myself much of a stress eater, I guess since I can't be a stress drinker anymore, I have transferred to becoming a stress eater. I was craving all kinds of junky foods, like tacos, noodles, fast food chinese, and even, once, a meatloaf and bacon sandwich. The usual semi-healthy stuff we eat at home and that I try to bring to work for lunch was just completely not what I wanted to eat, like ever. BUT now that I only have two weeks left (it was a short 9-week contract) and so the stress has dissapated somewhat and last week I have been back on the (mostly) healthy eating train although it is definitely more of a struggle now than it was before.
Also Pie-ya has been kicking a lot more! I have taken some time to sit and watch my belly, and it is crazy seeing it bulge outward as a little foot kicks from inside! I really like it though. I have started poking at my belly trying to communicate with Pie-ya or see how he is situated in there, but so far no signs of intelligent life in there, just kicks.
Clothes: I went clothes shopping a couple weeks ago and bought another pair of maternity jeans and a top. I wear only mat jeans, but I do switch between mat and non-mat tops. I think the non-mat tops make me look skinnier.
Symptoms: I have been having a bit of insomnia in the last week, not sure the exact cause though. Also peeing like every 2 hours! That's going to get old fast I think.
Cravings: That burger on friday. Greens.
Fun times: Some of my friends in Vancouver threw me a baby shower this weekend, it was so great! I felt very loved with friends around me giving me some great advice and such thoughtful gifts. Sometimes I feel sad living far away from my family but it's times like that I realize I have a lot of support right here in Vancouver too, which is such a nice warm feeling.
Speaking of stuff: l have been borrowing a bunch of baby stuff from friends here in Vancouver. Sorting through all that stuff, plus the new gifts I have been given, makes me really eager to have this baby soon. Sometimes it feels unreal that soon we will will have an actual baby to push around in this stroller, or to bathe in this bathtub.
New Experiences: So I took a 2-hour blood glucose tolerance test on Friday. It is supposed to test for gestational diabetes. Everyone told me it was horrible but I didn't believe them because a lot of things that are supposed to be horrible in pregnancy have not really been that bad for me. But this was pretty bad. First off, I had to fast from midnight until the 9 AM test. Keep in mind most nights I wake up from 3-5 AM, eat some food like a bowl of cereal, go back to bed, and then wake up and have another full 2 or 3 egg breakfast before 9 AM. If I don't eat, I get very queasy and sick to my stomach.
So I wasn't feeling all that great at 9 AM when they took my fasting blood sample. Then I had to drink down this thick, sickly-sweet glucose drink. THEN I had to wait 2 hours while they took my blood 2 more times. By the end all I wanted to do was drown out the gross feeling in my stomach with a huge greasy burger. So I did, but it really didn't help that much. I felt really "off" the rest of the day and didn't feel like myself until the next day.
I decided if I don't have gestational diabetes I will never take this test again (for future pregnancies).
Baby’s Name: We are trying to narrow down a list of 5 names or so that we will take into the hospital with us. We want to see what the baby looks like before we give him a name.
Weight Gained: 2 weeks ago I went to my midwives, I had gained about 15 lbs to that point. She also said I was measuring big, but I forgot to ask by how much. This is one reason why she wanted me to test for gestational diabetes.
OK I think that's it, have a good week everyone!

The GD test is not optional here. Even if you don't have it for one pregnancy, you may have it for another. They concider every pregnancy different you will need to test each time. not sure if Vancouver has the same rules.
ReplyDeleteHey due date twin!
ReplyDeleteHow are you feeling? Did you do the Glucose test?
It's funny how policies are different in different places! Here the GD test is optional, but medical care in general is MUCH more laid back here compared to the US (a bit too much if you ask me!). I tend to err on the "get tested" side but this one was very unpleasant.
Luckily, I didn't have to fast. I think I did with Elena, but not this one! Feeling good. been haveing some contractions but nothing to worry about at this point. I have a Dr apt on friday so we shall see how she is doing then. Will mostlikely have a C-Section again. I have been thinking about it a lot and not sure I want to go through labor to end up with a c/s anyway... and to be honest, it wasn't that bad with Elena.
